TL;DR

"gLife" was a 2015 project aimed at streamlining meeting, appointment, and travel expense management for Googlers by integrating internal systems data. A video was created to showcase the concept, which, while generating both skepticism and intrigue, provided a valuable experience for sharing new ideas.

Introduction

Internal teams discussed two similar concepts around travel. This concept streamlined the management of meetings, appointments, and travel expenses.

Process

To create the scenario depicted in the video, we combined internal systems data (such as Google Calendar, travel booking, and travel cost tools) with information about distributed team locations and working habits, and added a touch of creative license.

I collaborated with a designer to develop a visual script for the concept, which I then animated. Our UX manager provided valuable feedback by helping us pressure test and refine our ideas.

Outcomes

The video we created was met with a healthy dose of skepticism and intrigue, as is expected with anything that involves connecting internal corporate data. This was natural given that we were already doing some of these things, such as using calendars or systems to show nearby colleagues and suggesting people based on email groups and projects. Ultimately, it was a valuable experience to share these ideas.
